What does the Bible say about Jesus Christ?

Verse to memorize: John 1:1

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Lesson goal:  To see Jesus as the unique (that's the idea of the word "only begotten") creator and Savior of the world.  The Bible presents Him as having both the divine nature and human nature combined in one unique person (called the hypostatic union-two distinct natures in one person).

Jesus Christ:  Our Creator

Q1    What does John 1:3 and 1 Corinthians 8:6 say Jesus created?

John 1:3

"All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."

1 Corinthians 8:6

"But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him."

Jesus Christ:  His Life on Earth

Q2    In Philippians 2:7, the Bible says Jesus took the form of a _________ (fill in the blank) and was made in the likeness of ________ (fill in the blank).

Q3    When Jesus was born, who were we now able to watch alive in human flesh like us?

1 Timothy 3:16

"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

Q4    Who made Mary able to have this new child, Jesus Christ?

Matthew 1:20

"But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost."

Q5    Where was Jesus born?

Matthew 2:1

"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem."

Jesus Christ:  He is God

Q6    How did Peter say Jesus was in Matthew 16:16?

Matthew 16:16

"And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Q7    What does Romans 1:4 say happened to Jesus to show He was God's special Son?

Romans 1:4

"And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead."

Q8    What do we learn about Jesus in John 1:1?

John 1:1

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Q9    Does Colossians 2:9 tell us that only a part of God lived in Jesus, or that all the fullness of God is present in him?

Colossians 2:9

"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."

Jesus Christ: His Work on the Earth for Us

Q10    Why did Jesus die on the cross?

1 Corinthians 15:3

"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures."

Q11    Did Jesus die for all of us?

1 John 2:2

"And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world."

Q12    Why did Jesus come to live on the earth?

1 Timothy 1:15

"This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief."

Q13    What happened to Jesus in John 19:17-18?

John 19:17-18

"17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst."

Q14    Did Jesus die there?

John 19:30, 32

"30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him."

Q15    Was Jesus buried?

John 19:38-42

"38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. 39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. 40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. 42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand."

Q16    What did people find when they came later to look for the body of Jesus?

John 20:1-2, 5-8

"1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. 2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. 5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. 6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, 7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. 8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed."
